Over the last several years, we've seen more casinos rolling out novelty blackjack games in an effort to attract recreational players. More specifically, there are an increased amount of poolside and party pit blackjack tables in gaming destinations like Atlantic City and Las Vegas.

The obvious draw to these games is that they provide a much different atmosphere for players to enjoy. However, there are some major drawbacks to both party pit and pool blackjack that players should be aware of. But before we discuss the downside to alternative blackjack, let's describe both of these setups in-depth.

Party Pit Blackjack

Contrary to the name, there is no actual party happening in the party pit. However, the beautiful and scantily-clad girls who are dealing the games and dancing in nearby cages provide more than enough excitement for most players. This being said, if you're a red-blooded male, you'll definitely appreciate the party pits in casinos.

Pool Blackjack

What could be better than hanging out at a luxurious casino resort pool and basking in the sun? How about playing blackjack while you're hanging out at these pools! A poolside blackjack table allows you to swim up and take an underwater seat while you try to best the house at their own game.

Costly Entertainment

Obviously party pit and pool blackjack games sound a lot more exciting than the typical, stale casino environment. However, you also have to be aware that you're paying for the extra entertainment through the form of worse blackjack rules.

What's great for casinos is that poor rules are often hidden costs to recreational players who don't know any better. As is the case with many single deck blackjack games, casual players see a pool or party pit table and neglect to think about the disadvantages they could be facing. And the disadvantages can be numerous including the following unfavorable rules: 6:5 blackjack payouts (instead of 3:2), dealers hitting on a soft 17 (rather than standing), not being able to re-split aces, and only being able to split 9's, 10's and aces. Sure you probably won't run into all of these at once, but be aware that the unfavorable rules could push the house edge up 2% or more.

Have Fun...just not too Much

In nearly every case, you'll have less of an opportunity to win money in party pit and pool blackjack games. However, this doesn't mean you have to totally avoid these tables - especially if you find them to be extremely fun! Just don't over-extend your sessions due to the higher house edge.
