One of the first things that people learn when they get into online slots strategy is to look for games with the highest payout percentages. For example, you would be better off playing a 95% payback game instead of a 90% payback game. Looking at this from a long-term perspective, you'd receive $0.95 back on every dollar wagered versus $0.90 on every dollar bet.

Obviously this concept isn't too difficult to understand, and you should spend some time researching slots games with the highest payout percentages. However, there is more to the story than most people know, which is why it's worth discussing another important aspect of payout percentages.

Max Spins on High Payout Percentage Slots Games

Sometimes the downside to finding loose slots is that you have to spend more money to achieve a great payout percentage. For example, let's assume that you find an online slots game with a 98% payback rate. Obviously this sounds great because you're on a near-even playing field with the casino.

But the catch to these games is that the max bets are sometimes $3 or more, and you have to wager this amount to be eligible for the jackpot. Going further, you have to be eligible for the jackpot to achieve the 98% payback. To break this math down further, by betting $3 on every spin, you'd theoretically lose $0.06 per spin.

In contrast, let's assume you're playing a 95% payback game where max bets are $1. Here the average player will lose $0.05 per spin, which is actually less than the aforementioned higher payout percentage game. This being said, some players question whether it's worth it to play the seemingly better games - even when you're making more money back per spin on average.

Should you still play High Payout Percentage Games?

While the math sometimes shows that games with lower payout percentages/lower spin costs are cheaper than higher payout percentage games, it doesn't necessarily mean you should avoid the latter. After all, not all high-paying games are super-expensive to play.

It should also be said that many slots games with higher max spins/better payout percentages feature the biggest progressive jackpots. So if you're looking to get rich with slots by hitting a multi-million dollar jackpot, don't be afraid to spend a little more money to play.
